“Lifestyle changes are a process that take time and require support. Once you’re ready to make a change, the difficult part is committing and following through. So do your research and make a plan that will prepare you for success. Careful planning means setting small goals and taking things one step at a time.” – American Psychological Association. (2010). Making lifestyle changes that last.
Do you often feel like you’re experiencing the same problems?
Do you feel like no matter what you do, you never seem like you’re getting anywhere?
If you answered yes to either of these questions, a lifestyle change might just be what you need!
3 years ago in 2016 I personally would have answered yes to both of those opening questions. I felt stuck, trapped in the same patterns, I never had the energy to do anything. It felt like I was always busy, but in reality, I was doing absolutely nothing. I was in a very toxic marriage, I had problems raising my children, and with my self-image. My life was a mess and I couldn’t figure out what was going on, something NEEDED to change.
Removing toxic people/things!
The best thing I ever did for myself was removing the toxic people and things out of my life. That was the first step I took towards my life change. I will admit, it was extremely scary and hard. But oh so worth it! Now I’m not saying that if you argue with your spouse, that you should pack his or her things and throw it out to the curb. There were many, many factors on both of us choosing to leave our marriage, but that’s a totally different topic.
Sometimes we don’t realize how much those toxic things keep us in a standstill, holds us down from essential growth, and really damper your overall view of yourself.
I started cutting all of it out of my life. One by one. If it did not contribute to my growth, my happiness; or the happiness of my children, I didn’t want it.
This opened a very scary, fresh new start for me. I started to realize exactly what I wanted to achieve for myself and my family. HAPPINESS!
What are some things that make you happy?
When was the last time you did something that made YOU happy?
I decided it was time to work on my happiness. I needed to get up and moving, personally, I always love being outdoors, something about nature always had this homey feeling to me.
So, I started taking my children for walks, to lakes, out to look at flowers. We started doing more as a family. Not only did that improve my happiness, but my children seemed happier too. I also started picking up long loved hobbies. I started making jewelry again, drawing, and painting. Instead of being busy doing nothing, I started being busy with things that brought me happiness.
Tell me, what’s 3 things you could do today that could promote your happiness?
We adults all have problems we must face. It could be financial, it would be with the way we handle things, it could be with our family life.
Whatever the problem is, don’t put off facing it. If you tried facing the problem but it keeps recurring, then perhaps you need to come up with a different way to solve it.
For me, my recurring problem was for example, feeling as if I never had time or energy. I would just try to wake up earlier but however, was too tired to want to do anything. I had to find out what I was doing that made me feel like I never had time, I had to reevaluate my priorities. Soon I realized I was exhausting myself with things that weren’t really important and in doing so I never had the time or energy to do what needed to be done. I was living an unhealthy, and unhappy life.
The change I started making first, was going to bed earlier. Then I found myself waking up a little sooner. I got important things done first and making sure I was spending time with my children so they wouldn’t end up being too needy later.
Doing this I found myself with more time. I wasn’t as tired since I was getting more sleep and felt better during the day. I felt like I had more time to spend with the kids and time to work on things I enjoyed.
My lifestyle change promoted more happiness, a better view of myself and my life, and increased my time. All my cutting out the negative, toxic people. Finding new ways to solve my problems, and doing more of what I enjoy.
Now I’m more ready to work towards my goals of being a traveler and running a small business.
What lifestyle change could you make today to live your best life?
